A fire on the third floor of a Myrtle Street home ripped through the two-family house Wednesday morning and left six residents displaced, officials said.
No one was injured, but the fire burnt through the third and second stories of the home and left it inhabitable. Neighbors reported the fire at 10:09 a.m. Wednesday and it drew nearly the entire Norwalk Fire Department. Engines from nearby cities covered Norwalk fire stations while firefighters battled the blaze.
Heavy snows caused a nearby hydrant to freeze and break when firefighters tried to hook a hose to its valve, Norwalk Fire Deputy Chief Stephan Shay said. Firefighters found a second hydrant about 800 feet away and began dousing the flames using the working water source.
It took about an hour to contain the aggressive fire, Shay said.
The fire appeared to begin somewhere in the third floor. Fire marshals are investigating what caused the blaze, which left charred gaping holes in the back of the third floor. Ash and burnt pieces of wood covered the fresh snow the in the backyard.

NORWALK -- A fire, which started on the rear porch of a Senga Road house Saturday night, nearly ended tragically for two family dogs but Norwalk fire crews were able to pull them from the smoke and flame.
Deputy Chief Stephen Shay said that upon arrival to 11 Senga Road just after 9 p.m., fire crews found heavy fire blowing out the rear of the home on the first and second floor.
Firefighters stretched a line to the front door for "fire extinguishment" while truck companies ventilated the house according to Shay. The houses' occupants were not home at the time but fire officials began a search and rescue operation for two dogs. Both dogs were found alive and brought outside.
Shay said the fire appears to have started in the back porch of the single-family home. The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
Neighbors were first to alert the fire department to the fire.
The house was posted unfit for occupancy displacing four occupants. The first and second floor sustained heavy fire damage and smoke damage to the rest of the house.
