The Norwalk Fire Department responded to fire in a single family home, at 1 Orchard Hill Court, at 3:08 pm today. A neighbor had called 911, after noticing heavy smoke coming from the home. Upon arrival Firefighters stretched hose lines to the first and second floors extinguishing a bulk of the fire in the kitchen and bedroom. When a portion of the 2nd floor bedrooms floor collapsed a 2nd alarm was transmitted, bringing 2 additional Engines to the scene and having Westport and New Canaan cover Westport Avenue and New Canaan Avenue stations. The fire had burned away 3 floor joists in-between the floors, causing the collapse. When all personnel were accounted for the fire was placed under control at 3:45 pm. Firefighters and investigators remained on scene till 5:30 pm.
The family was not home at the time of the fire and will be staying with relatives, as the house is unfit for occupancy. 29 Firefighters responded, with 4 Engines, 2 Trucks a Rescue and Command Car. The cause of the fire is under investigation, by Deputy Fire Marshal Kirk McDonald and Fire Inspector Bryan Scully.
