Norwalk Fire Department
Press Release
October 12, 2013
Norwalk firefighters are presently receiving training in Autism Spectrum Disorders and Autism. The training is supported by a federal grant and is being taught by first responders that have first hand knowledge of the disease with a family member or relative. The insight of the instructors both personally and professionally will help the department’s personnel safely approach and care for children and adults afflicted with Autism spectrum disorders or Autism.
Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and autism are both general terms for a group of complex disorders of brain development. These disorders are characterized, in varying degrees, by difficulties in social interaction, verbal and nonverbal communication and repetitive behaviors.
In the attached picture, Norwalk firefighters are being taught Autism awareness by Westwood, Massachusetts Firefighter/Paramedic Jason Dorval. The classes are being held in the new fire stations training classroom.
