April 16, 2012
Norwalk Firefighters responded to a fire in a two family house at 19 Lawrence St. Norwalk combined dispatch received a call of a possible structure fire at 2:00 this afternoon. The Meadow Street fire unit were first to arrive, and were on the scene in less than one minute. Norwalk Police department arrived on scene just prior to Engine 5 and confirmed a working fire with smoke and flames coming from the attic. The bulk of the fire was knocked down within fifteen minutes of our arrival. The major amount of damage was in the attic and the second floor. There was some water damage to the first floor also. Truck companies needed to cut a hole in the roof to allow the heat and smoke to vent out so that the engine crew could apply water to the fire. Other fire crews checked for fire extension and made a secondary search to confirm that all occupants were out of the house.
Electrical and gas service has been shut off until the house can be reoccupied. Six occupants live in the house and will be relocated by the Red Cross. The cause of the fire is being investigated by Deputy Fire Marshal Chris Hansen with assistance by Inspector Tom Raila. 24 Firefighters on 2 Trucks, 3 Engines a Rescue and Command Car responded to the scene along with an Norwalk Hospital ambulance in case any injuries occurred. The last fire unit cleared the scene at 3:08 with the fire marshal division still on scene.
