The Norwalk Fire Department responded to a serious single car accident this morning at 1:47am on Interstate 95. The car, a Nissan Murano slid along the guard rail for approximately 200’ before jumping the guardrail and traveling down an embankment 40’. The car came to rest in heavy brush between exits 13 and 14, on the northbound side of the highway. Firefighters worked for 20 minutes to extricate the lone female driver from the vehicle. The accident caused the roof to be crushed down to the front seat level and pinned the driver between the front seat and the dashboard. The driver, a Norwalk woman approximately in her 30’s was semi-conscious with serious injuries, when extricated and transported to Norwalk Hospital by Paramedics. Debris from the vehicle which included a car seat and stroller were strewn along the highway and wooded area around the crash site causing Firefighters to search the area to determine if anyone had been ejected during the crash. The search tuned out to be negative and was confirmed by police checking with the woman’s family. 12 firefighters responded to the scene with an Engine, Truck, Rescue and Command car. Firefighters also responded to a second minor accident across the highway on the southbound side after clearing the extrication. The car, a Fiat had a possible mechanical malfunction, causing it to come in contact with the Jersey barrier; the 5 people in the vehicle were all uninjured. All Fire Companies cleared the highway by 3:15am.
