Press Release
May 26, 2012
The Norwalk Fire Department responded to a structure fire today just after 10:30 am, at the 16 School St. Housing Complex, in Apartment 34. Upon arrival fire crews found a light smoke condition on the first floor and a high level of heat at the interior basement door. Fire crews quickly entered the basement to extinguish a small fire in the stairwell. The stairwell sustained heavy heat and smoke damage while the rest of the apartment remained habitable, with a slight odor of smoke. Fire Inspector Broderick Sawyer ruled the fire as accidental and credits the basement smoke detector in notifying a resident of the fire. A young lady in her 20’s was able to escape the apartment, prior to the Fire Departments arrival. The Norwalk Housing Authority, which owns the complex, will assist in making the necessary repairs to the apartment. No other apartments were affected by the fire. 24 Firefighter responded to the scene on 3 Engines, 2 Trucks a Rescue and Command Car. Firefighters cleared the scene by 12:00 pm.
