The Norwalk Fire Department responding to an automatic fire alarm this morning at 770 Connecticut Avenue found an electrician severely burned and the building charged with smoke. The electrician a contractor in his 60’s out of New York was replacing a distribution switch with an assistant in the buildings main electrical room, when the accident occurred at 8:40 am. The injured man sustained arc/flash burn injuries to over 40% and was transported directly to Bridgeport Hospitals Burn Unit, by Norwalk Hospital Paramedics. The 2 story building houses a carpet store and day care (not opened yet) on the1st floor and Crunch Gym on the 2nd floor. Occupants of the gym self evacuated while Firefighters checked for any fire extension and ventilated the smoke, caused by the burnt wire insulation and burnt electrical components. The arc of electricity created by the accident was strong enough to tripped two line circuit breakers feeding the building and CL&P linemen were called to the scene to disconnect a third line that fed the building and did not trip. All Power was secured to the building until repairs could be made. Firefighters were on scene till 10 am, ensuring that the building was ventilated; Fire Inspector Broderick Sawyer and Electrical Inspector Sal Cenatiempo were on scene investigating the cause of the accident.
