Norwalk Fire Department
Press Release

February 5, 2012

The Norwalk Fire Department responded to a large fire this morning at the Silver Ridge Condominium Complex located at 8 Oakwood Avenue , in Norwalk . The fire was reported to the Dispatch Center by multiple 911 calls at 5:45 am.  Upon arrival at the scene fire crews were faced with a large volume of fire in several units and consuming all 3 levels of a rear deck that ran the length of the 16 unit building, in the complex. Fire Crews initially worked to ensure that the roughly 16 occupants were evacuated out the front of the building in heavy smoke conditions, while hose lines were being placed to aggressively attack on the fire in several units.  While fighting the blaze Fire Crews were forced to temporarily withdraw from the interior attack and shift to a brief defensive attack, when the fire racing up the rear of the building entered the attic and portions of the roof began to collapse. Aerial master streams were used to knock down a bulk of the exterior fire on the rear decks and roof areas, allowing fire crews to reenter the building to finish extinguishing the blaze.  The Silver Ridge Condominium Complex located behind the Merritt 7 Office Complex off Main Avenue , was built in 1986 with wood frame and truss construction. Portions of the truss floor in several units and roof collapsed or became compromised making the battling the blaze extremely dangerous for firefighters.  One occupant was treated for minor smoke inhalation and released from Norwalk Hospital by noon. Most of the occupants were able to retrieve some of their belongings and remove their vehicles from the garages underneath the building, before the firefighters determined the interior of the building to be unsafe for entry.  An adjoining 8 unit building was evacuated and power was turned off until an electrician could inspected several fixtures that had water infiltration. Consolidated Property Management Company was on scene after the fire to assist occupants with securing the building and work the Condominium Association.  All of Norwalk ’s 32 on duty Firefighters responded to the scene with 5 Engines, 2 Trucks a Rescue and Command Car. Wilton supplied an Engine at the scene and Westport , New Canaan and Rowayton covered the Norwalk Stations till 8 am.  The last fire crews cleared the scene by 1pm. Fire marshal Glen Iannaccone and Fire inspector Kirk McDonald are investigating the cause of the blaze.
