The Norwalk Fire Department responded to a reported structure fire this morning at St Paul ’s Terrace Condominiums, off Martin Luther King Boulevard in South Norwalk . The fire started in the garage of unit 60, which is located in a group of 10 units 3 stories high with garages on the first floor. The call to 911 came in at 4:52 am.
The 3 occupants, a husband and wife along with heir college age son escaped the condo out a rear sliding door on the second floor, because the location of the fire cut off their egress out the front door; fortunately they were awoken by the smoke detectors.
Norwalk Hospital Paramedics were called to the scene to evaluate an elderly woman; whose neighboring unit had elevated levels of carbon monoxide.
The fire which originated just inside the garage door was extinguished within minutes of the fire departments arrival. Even thought the fire was handled quickly, the unit was posted unfit for occupancy from smoke and soot damage. Power to the row of 10 units was also shut down, due to the proximity of the main service cables to the fire. The condo association management personnel were on scene making arrangements for an electrician and commercial salvage company to check the building.
2 Engines, 2 Trucks a Rescue and Command car responded to the scene and cleared by 7:45 am. Fire Inspector Luca Feola remained on scene investigating the cause.
