258 Ely Ave, 36 Van Zant Structure Fires - July 13, 2011
Updated On: Apr 27, 2013

July 13, 2011

The Norwalk Fire Department responded to two fires on Tuesday evening that caused minor damage to the two structures.

The first fire occurred in the garage of County Construction located at 258 Ely Avenue in South Norwalk , just after 5 p.m. A fire in the engine compartment of a commercial pickup truck located inside one of the 3 garages attached to a business office damaged the truck and some nearby construction equipment. Fire crews were able to extinguish the blaze in 15 minutes and remained on scene till 7:15 p.m. ensuring that the fire didn’t extent into the roof of the garage. Firefighters had to cut the garage door for access and the roof was ventilated to relieve the built up heat and fire gases. With some minor repairs and cleaning the company was able to remain open for business.

The second fire occurred at 36 Van Zant Street in East Norwalk , a mixed use commercial and residential structure, at 7:40 p.m. An electrical service line to the building overheated and flaming insulation from the wires fell onto the awning of the Beijing Restaurant causing it to catch on fire and extent to the buildings vinyl siding. While East Norwalk Electric crews secured power to the building, firefighters check the interior for any fire extension. Fire damage was limited to the exterior and power was restored by 10:30 p.m. and the 25 residents were able to return to their apartments.

Fire Inspector Brodrick Sawyer was on the scene of both fires and is investigating the cause of the truck fire. Inspector Sawyer credits Army Specialist Harrison Arango for his help keeping the fire in check. Specialist Arango was in the area and used an extinguisher from the restaurant to knock down the flames of the burning awning until fire crews arrived.
