Press Release
November 5, 2011
The Norwalk Fire Department responded to a reported structure fire at this morning, just after 1:20 am at 105 South Main Street. Upon arrival, fire crews had heavy fire involvement of the entire first floor apartment and fire was extending into the second and third floor apartments. Second and third alarms were struck upon arrival, which bought all of Norwalk’s 32 firefighters to the scene, with 5 Engines, 2 Trucks a Rescue and Command Car. New Canaan, Westport and Rowayton Engines provided mutual aid coverage to the city during the blaze.
The 3 story wood frame home was divided into 4 legal apartments and housed 10 tenants, all of which were able to escape the structure without any reported injuries. An additional 6 tenants were displaced from another apartment on the property due to a damaged electrical service line, caused by the fire. Michele Deluca, Deputy Director of Emergency Management was on scene to assist the displaced tenants and was able to utilize the Police Departments Community Room (located a block from the fire) while housing arrangements were being coordinated with the Red Cross.
Fire crews picked up and cleared the scene by 4:30 am. Once Norwalk crews were back in service the mutual aid engines were released. Deputy Fire Marshal Chris Hansen, who was on scene throughout the fire interviewing the tenants, remained on scene and was still investigating the cause of the blaze.
