Local 830 Endorses Mayor Moccia
Updated On: Nov 10, 2011

Moccia lands firefighters' Union Endorsement

The Norwalk Firefighters Union has endorsed Republican incumbent Richard A. Moccia in his bid for a fourth term as mayor of Norwalk, according to the "Moccia '11" campaign and union heads.   Art Scialabba, Moccia's campaign manager and chairman of the Republican Town Committee, on Wednesday issued a statement announcing that the International Association of Firefighters Local 830 is backing Moccia.  "Local 830 is encouraging all of its members as well as the residents of Norwalk to vote for Mayor Dick Moccia for Re-election," said Local 830 President Lefty Petrides in the statement. "He understands the needs of Norwalk Fire Fighters and has worked well with the union to ensure that our members have the resources needed to keep the citizens of Norwalk safe."  Moccia said in the statement that he was "very pleased to have received the endorsement."  "As a former fire commissioner, and as mayor, I value the work of our firefighters and I look forward to continuing to work with them as mayor," Moccia said.  Peter Brown, Local 830 vice president and member of the union's executive board, said the union makes endorsements through its executive board and a political action committee that is a subgroup of the union.   "It was brought up by our executive board," Brown said. "We've had a very good working relationship with the mayor over the years, so we made the recommendation to the PAC that we endorse him in the upcoming election, and they voted to go through with it."   Brown said the endorsement was made within the last couple days.  The firefighters union backed Moccia strongly in 2005 when he was first elected mayor. Local 830 did not endorse a mayoral candidate in 2007, according to Petrides.  Likewise, Local 830 did not endorse a mayoral candidate in 2009, according to Scialabba.  Local 830 represents 120 Norwalk firefighters.
