North Taylor Avenue Blaze

City man, firefighter injured in early morning blaze on North Taylor Avenue

Norwalk Hour
Staff Reports

An early morning kitchen fire in an apartment at 14 North Taylor Ave. sent the occupant to the hospital with burns on his hands, and also caused a firefighter to break his ankle, according to fire officials.  The Norwalk Fire Department responded to the call at 2 a.m. Sunday. The fire in the Pinebrook Apartment Complex was confined to Apartment 3 of building 3.  The complex has three apartment buildings with nine to 11 apartments in each building. The apartment building with the fire is three stories high and contains nine apartments; the fire was on the second floor.  According to Deputy Chief Edward Prescott, the lone occupant of the apartment in which the fire occurred, a 47-year-old male, was able to escape the blaze, but suffered burns to both his hands.  He was transported by paramedics at the scene to Norwalk Hospital. The occupants of the other apartments in the building were able to safely evacuate, fire officials said.
Firefighter Troy Donohue, a six-year-veteran of the Norwalk Fire Department, suffered a broken ankle during a fall while battling the blaze and was transported by paramedics to Norwalk Hospital.  Fire Chief Denis McCarthy said Sunday evening that Donohue underwent successful surgery at Norwalk Hospital on Sunday. McCarthy said he expects "a long recovery" for Donohue and predicts that the firefighter may be out of action "for two to three months."  The apartment was posted unfit for occupancy later Sunday, and all other tenants in the building were allowed to return to their apartments shortly after 3:30 am.  Fire Marshal Glenn Iannacone said Sunday evening that the cause of the fire is under investigation by the fire marshal's office.
